PNG, GIF, and BMP are always lossless — the quality slider is disabled for those formats and file size is determined purely by image content.

Each file can be up to 20MB. Very large images (4000px+ or 15MB+) may take a few seconds to process since Canvas API renders them in the browser. There is no server-side limit since everything runs locally.

WebP offers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality, and 50-80% smaller files than PNG for photos. It supports both lossy and lossless modes plus alpha transparency. All modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) support WebP natively. Converting your site's images to WebP is one of the most impactful Core Web Vitals improvements you can make.

GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame. If you convert a full-color JPEG to GIF, the result will look posterized because millions of colors are reduced to 256. This is a fundamental GIF limitation, not a tool issue. For photographic content, use JPEG or WebP instead of GIF. GIF is best reserved for simple graphics, icons, and animations with limited color ranges.

PNG (full alpha channel, best quality), WebP (full alpha channel, smaller files), and GIF (1-bit binary transparency — a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque). JPEG and BMP do not support transparency — transparent areas are filled with the background color (white by default) when converting to these formats.
