Frequently Asked Questions

The converter reads your image pixel by pixel using the browser Canvas API, then maps the brightness of each pixel to an ASCII character — darker pixels get dense characters like @ or #, lighter pixels get sparse ones like . or space. The result is a text grid that approximates the visual appearance of the original image.

Four options: Standard (@#$%&*+=-:.) uses common keyboard characters; Blocks uses Unicode block characters for a sharper look; Simple (.:#@) uses fewer characters for a high-contrast result; Custom lets you type any characters you want to use. The order of characters matters — they are mapped from light to dark based on visual density.

Color mode adds HTML span tags with inline color styles around each character, tinting it with the original pixel color. The output is HTML rather than plain text. Paste it into an HTML file or editor that renders HTML to see the colorized ASCII art. For plain text output (copy to terminal, chat, README), use the non-color mode.

Start with 80–100 characters for typical use. Higher widths (150–200+) produce more detail but require a wide screen or small monospace font to look correct — ASCII art aspect ratio depends on the font used. If the result looks stretched vertically, reduce the width. Most terminals and code editors work well at 80 characters.

PNG, JPEG, and WebP images up to 10 MB. Photos and illustrations both work. High-contrast images with clear outlines produce the best results. Very complex or low-contrast images may look muddled at lower widths — try increasing the width or using a higher-contrast version of the image.

ASCII art works anywhere that supports plain text: GitHub README files and code comments, terminal output, chat messages and forums, plain-text emails, and retro-style UI designs. Color mode output works for HTML pages, emails with HTML rendering, or web-based chat platforms like Discord that render HTML.

Yes. Use the Download button to save the result as a .txt file (for plain text output) or an .html file (for color mode output). The text can also be copied directly to the clipboard.

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API and JavaScript. Your images are read from your device's memory and never transmitted anywhere. You can use this tool with sensitive images without privacy concerns.

Turn Any Image Into Text Art

Want to add some retro flair to your README or terminal? Drop in any image and this tool converts it to ASCII characters by mapping pixel brightness to text. The result is a text-based picture you can paste anywhere plain text works.

Copy, Paste, Share Anywhere

ASCII art works in places images cannot: code comments, terminal outputs, plain-text emails, chat messages. Pick a character set, toggle color mode if you want HTML output, and copy the result. No account needed, nothing uploaded, runs 100% in your browser.
