Frequently Asked Questions

Morse code is a communication system that represents each letter and digit as a sequence of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed it in the 1830s for telegraph communication. A dot is 1 unit long, a dash is 3 units, the gap between symbols is 1 unit, between letters is 3 units, and between words is 7 units.

Common letters: A = .- , B = -... , C = -.-. , E = . , S = ... , O = --- . Numbers: 1 = .---- , 2 = ..--- through 0 = ----- . SOS is the famous distress signal: ... --- ... (three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent without letter gaps).

Use a single space to separate letters and a forward slash (/) to separate words. So "HI THERE" becomes ".... .. / - .... . .-. .". The tool handles this formatting automatically when you convert text to Morse.

The full International Morse Code alphabet: A–Z (uppercase and lowercase treated the same), digits 0–9, and common punctuation including period (.-.-.-), comma (--..--), question mark (..--..), exclamation (!), apostrophe (.----.), and more.

The tool uses the Web Audio API built into your browser to generate real audio tones. No sound files are downloaded. You can adjust the speed from 5 WPM (very slow, good for learning) up to 30 WPM (fast, used by experienced operators). The standard frequency is 600 Hz.

WPM stands for "words per minute." In Morse code, the standard test word is "PARIS" (which has a representative mix of short and long characters). At 20 WPM, you send 20 "PARIS" equivalents per minute. Beginners typically start at 5–10 WPM; licensed amateur radio operators often work at 20+ WPM.

Yes. Amateur (ham) radio operators use it worldwide, and some countries still require Morse proficiency for certain license classes. It is also used in aviation (VOR navigation beacons transmit their identifier in Morse), emergency situations (SOS), and as a form of assistive communication for people with limited mobility.

No. All conversion and audio generation runs locally in your browser using JavaScript and Web Audio API. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.

What is a Morse Code Translator?

Heard those beeps in old war movies? That's Morse code. This tool converts regular text into dots and dashes (and back again), and you can actually hear the result through your speakers. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type ever leaves your device.

Why Use This Morse Code Translator?

Type text, get Morse. Paste Morse, get text. Hit play and hear it as audio beeps with adjustable speed. Supports the full international alphabet, numbers, and punctuation. Great if you're learning Morse, into amateur radio, or just curious what your name sounds like in dots and dashes.
